Menhir near Benzingerode, August 4, 2002
|
|
| Location | | 1.5 km NE of Benzingerode, Harz region in Germany. |
| | In a field 100 m north of a sandy road. |
| Landscape | | An area (200 m. above sea level)
with fields and tree groups, and low hills (maximum 25 m. above and below area level).
The steep rim of the Harz mountain area is rising to 500 m. above sea level 2 km to the south
of the location. |
| Height | | about 3.5 m. |
| Diameter | | about 1 m. |
| Type of stone | |
Brownish and gray, quite pockmarked.
At the foot of the stone is a second stone, about 50 cm in diameter;
this forms a sort of chair, on which one can sit with ones back to the stone,
facing roughly north.
Peaces of straw from the harvesting of the field are in the little holes of the stone.
On the top is some white bird shit. |
| Remarks | - | In 2002 it was a nice
and quiet (we saw some small deer jumping away in the distance) place,
but in coming years a big east-west highway will be close by. |
| - | On the map
(Kompass map number 1019 (published probably april 2001))
is a second
stone marked, (ab. 1 km east of this one) but although the field was bare at the time of
our visit, we didn't see this second stone. Maybe it was already removed
(or replaced somewhere else?) because of the
coming highway? |
